Urology

Overview

Colorado Animal Specialty & Emergency (CASE) is proud to offer the most comprehensive diagnostics and treatments in Urology for the dogs and cats of Colorado and surrounding states. Urology is the field of medicine focused on the kidneys and urinary tract, including the ureters, bladder, and urethra.

Common urinary tract diseases in cats and dogs include:

  • Cystolithiasis (urinary stones)
  • Obstruction (ureter or urethra)
  • Infection
  • Bladder polyps/masses (urothelial cell carcinoma)
  • Incontinence (ectopic ureters, urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence)
  • Dysuria (inappropriate urination)
  • Stranguria (straining to urinate)
  • Hematuria (blood in the urine)

In addition to the medical management of these problems, our team has undergone special training to perform minimally invasive endourology and interventional radiology procedures. These minimally invasive procedures utilize fiberoptic endoscopes and other advanced imaging techniques such as fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and CT scans to address complex issues associated with the urinary tract. Compared with traditional open abdominal surgeries, minimally invasive procedures have shorter hospitalization, faster recovery times, and improved patient outcomes. The ability to perform various minimally invasive procedures allows our team to treat conditions that are not amenable to more traditional management (i.e., urinary tract cancer).

Common minimally invasive urology procedures include:

  • Urinary stone removal (Percutaneous cystolithotomy – PCCL)
  • Treatment of congenital and acquired incontinence (Laser or resectoscope ablation)
  • Urinary tract biopsies
  • Urinary tract tumor resection
  • Relieving ureteral and urethral obstruction (SUB device placement, urethral/ureteral stent placement)

Most diagnostics can be performed the same day, with procedures following 2-3 days after the initial consultation.
