What is a veterinary specialist?

A board-certified veterinary specialist is a veterinarian with advanced education and training in a specific discipline of veterinary medicine. His or her knowledge and skill in this area is evaluated and recognized by a specialty organization sanctioned by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Throughout the past 15 years, there has been tremendous growth in the volume of new information and procedures available within the veterinary field. As a result, it is virtually impossible for any one veterinarian to be an expert in every medical discipline. As in human medicine, this reality has led to the development of advanced training programs in specialized areas. If your pet needs advanced care for a particular condition, injury, or illness, your family veterinarian may refer him or her to a veterinary specialist. This is where we come in!

How we work with your family veterinarian

The partnership between a specialty and a family veterinarian is important. Specialists are an extension of your family veterinarian, and we work closely together to provide a comprehensive healthcare plan for your pet. We will always keep your veterinarian informed of your pet’s medical updates and proposed treatment options, so you can feel fully supported and confident in making the best decisions for your pet.

We are committed to compassionate care

At CASE, our compassion committee works to ensure each patient has the most positive and stress-free visit possible. Here are some of the tools and protocols our team has put into place to support and comfort each of our pet patients:
  • Separate Feline and Canine ICUs (Intensive Care Units)
  • Calming music playing for our patients in all of our recovery wards (featuring music developed based on clinical research to help enhance relaxation)
  • Comforting feline or canine pheromone products are used on several items throughout each patient’s visit. These types of products are clinically proven to reduce fear and help pets handle stressful situations.
  • Dimmable lights in recovery areas
  • Warm towels and highly dedicated attention for anesthesia recovery
  • Specialized treats and engagement methods for pets during medical tasks (such as getting blood drawn).
  • Monitoring and documenting patients’ emotional scores as well as their pain levels in order to gauge stress and anxiety. This way, we can implement additional calming tactics and utilize sedation as needed to keep our patients comfortable throughout their visit.
  • Keeping track of our patients’ reactions and experiences, as to prevent development of a negative emotional footprint.
